In 2014 the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance will give away $120,000 to Baltimore-area artists through a grant program called The Rubys. The first application deadline is February 2nd, and includes grants in the media and performing arts (see below for a detailed description of each discipline).
The application requires all artists to be at least 21 years of age and live in Baltimore or one of the five surrounding counties. Organizations and full-time students in degree earning programs are ineligible for a grant. Soon-to-be graduates are encouraged to apply for next year’s grant cycle.
Each artist can apply for up to $10,000 in funding for a specific project which is required to incorporate a public component within their work, to be displayed and shared with the Baltimore-area community.
The Rubys are loosely modeled after Creative Capital, a national organization that has invested millions in individual artist projects and broad-based professional development for artists. Baltimore’s own Matt Porterfield, Eric Dyer and MICA Artist in Residence, Paul Rucker are amongst those who have received Creative Capital grants.
The Deutsch Foundation has provided seed funding for The Rubys but is hopeful that other funders will step in to support the program and its dedication to the Baltimore region’s art community.
